In small days you're looking for something floaty, fast, and most of all fun. That's a lot to ask from a surfboard, especially with not much to work with. Well the New Toy by Surf Prescriptions takes the challenge head on. The New Toy is a quad, fun, small board with lots of thickness and width and very little length. The design is to keep you afloat while minimizing overall volume for improved performance. For the most part, that's what you get with the new toy. In small or medium weak surf the New Toy provides plenty of speed and floatation while allowing for performance driven surfing. However, once the waves start picking up, the New Toy begins struggling on the faster drops. Also, the small yet fatter design will take a few sessions to get used to, that is, if you've never surfed a board like this. But after a few sessions you'll find a solid small wave board in the New Toy.
The Board
Dimensions & Material
We tested the 5'6"H x 20"W x 2 1/2"T Polyurethane model. The board runs thick and wide to keep afloat in weak or small surf. The outline is best described as stubby.
Bottom
The bottom has a shallow entry single concave with a vee at the tail.
Tail
The board has a wide thumb tail again designed to maximize floatation.
Nose
The nose has a low to flat rocker, but with a slightly fuller outline. However the nose is pulled in compared to fish which does improve maneuverability.
Rails
The New Toy has rounded 50/50 rails to hard edges at the tail.
Fins
We tested the board with 4 Futures Vector II R1 454 fins.
The Test
Paddling
Paddling is great, it paddles similar to fish and has a little glide to it. The added thickness and width really improves paddling compared to a standard shortboard. Plus the flat nose provides more surface area on the water.
Catching
In small or slow waves the New Toy is pretty solid. The extra paddling allows the board to lock into this waves easily and the quad set up gives the board the necessary drive. Because of the short length, you'll have to put a little extra effort to get the board locked into the wave. Once locked in, the board easily holds the wave and provides a stable platform for pop ups. Unfortunately there isn't much room for error when it comes to foot placement. So you might miss the mark a few times while trying to settle into this board. Once up the board is stable and you'll be able to set yourself up for the bottom turn.
In bigger or faster waves the New Toy is challenged. The flat rocker and short nose makes landing steep or fast drops difficult as the nose tends to drive straight into the water. Also popping up requires more strength since your legs are immersed in the wave due to the shorter board length. What this means is on powerful waves it'll take more energy to pull your legs out of the water onto the deck of the board. But if you're going for these types of waves you'll likely start off with a different board.
In small or weak surf the New Toy ride is solid. The quad power is punchy but not overpowering. We found that you won't really need to move your feet around, one foot up front and one foot on the tail/ track pad for the whole ride. Big turns, airs, and snaps are all very doable, even in small surf. The New Toy has some resistance to bigger moves compared to a performance shortboard thruster, but ultimately, you'll be able to ride this board aggressively. The New Toy also generates speed well with each pump as the quad kicks in. After a pump or two you'll have enough speed to coast down the line. Also the quad set up plus the added girth, allows the board to float through slow or mushy sections.
In bigger or faster waves the New Toy still manages to keep up. The quad and fat volume set up seems too overpowering to confidently pull off big moves as the board becomes very directional. The board has plenty of drive to get you through the fast sections. However, anything bigger than head high sets are beyond this board. If the sets start picking up you're better off swapping to a standard shortboard or step-up.
Conclusion
The New Toy is in essence a surf toy designed for small to medium fun waves. The board takes a little getting used to but after a few surf sessions you'll be gelling with the New Toy. It has plenty of drive and floatation for weak surf while still allowing for aggressive surfing. In anything bigger than head high, the New Toy becomes overwhelmed. But if you're looking to build your quiver with a small wave addition, check out the New Toy.
